Roger Bannister is not only known for his running, but also his career as a neurologist. In 1954, Roger Bannister and three other runners met with Winston Churchill to raise money for reconstruction of local churches. A year later, he married his fiancé Moyra, in Switzerland. Within a few years, they had four children; Clive, Erin, Charlotte, and Thurstan. He also joined the Royal Army Medical Corps shortly after his graduation from Oxford, starting out as a lieutenant

After he retired from his running career in 1955, he graduated from Oxford University with a medical degree. He became a neurologist and studied an array of topics ranging from blood pressure to fainting. Roger Bannister was so devoted to neurology that he stated, “I’d rather be remembered for neurology than running.”

Shotly after his retirement he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a disease that causes slowness and tremors. On March 3rd, 2018, he died in Oxford from complications with this disease and was buried here where he still remains.
