"With the right combination of heart, effort, and a reasoned approach; that all barriers are artificial constraints ."
~ Joseph Sheader, Track and Cross Country Coach

People have been chasing the goal of a mile in under four minutes since 1886. Roger Bannister and the first sub-four-minute mile had a drastic impact on the world. He popularized interval training which is now one of the most commonly used running techniques to perfect one’s speed. He pioneered the idea of choosing light weight shoes and arrow dynamic clothing to boost performance. This has become a staple in modern professional sports; runners select state of the art equipment (such as the Vaporfly shoes) to maximize performance. He was able to persevere when the doctors told him that is mile would be unachievable and used his medical background when practicing. Roger Bannister is an inspiration to the majority of people to be persistent, and runners to continue pushing themselves even when someone tells them that they can’t. This proved to people that through practice one can accomplish many things.

Roger Bannister’s mile had both a short and a long-term impact on Britain. After the devastation of World War II, Britain was discouraged. Roger Bannisters mile was able to give Britain a win and boost their confidence. This helped to bring life back to those in Britain and give a new sense of hope.
