Gunder Hagg, a Swedish runner, took to the starting line on July 17th, 1945, in Malmo Sweden in hopes of beating his previous mile record. Within five minutes, Gunder Hagg had completed his mile in four minutes, one second, and four milliseconds, a time that people believed no one would beat. This sett a new record that was later broke by Roger Bannister in 1954.
